Nice to know that someone over at the Beeb considers spontaneous, unjustified demonstrations of violent anti-Semitism to be a “chilling” outgrowth of homespun conspiracy theories and paranoia, rather than in some way justified.

The chilling implication I was left with was that, had I been Jewish, the assault would have apparently been justified.

The irony that BBC reporting on events in and concerning Israel have for years provided their readers with that exact impression was apparently lost on the writer.

The problem is that the religion has been politicized so as to make the religion virtually indistinguishable from the religion

I presume you meant politics in the last word.

Even though Egypt is not a theocracy, Islam rules and Islam is designed for theocracy, just like ancient Christianity was.

I he nailed it, poetically. Religion has become so transformed that we mistake the transformation for the original religion. Even most practitioners of a given religion interpret their scriptures through the transformation.

Remember the line in Chinatown, when John Huston is lunching with Jack Nicholson—and asks if Escobar is an honest cop? Nicholson replies, ‘Yeah, although he has to swim in the same waters as the rest of us.’

Sociologically, we’ve stopped asking what waters we all swim in. We used to ask those questions, after WWII. Somehow we think the waters have changed. They haven’t, and the waters affect all things, religion included, maybe religion especially.

What waters? The persistent anomie, alienation, and disassociation that affects every facet of our lives. How can religious thinking be immune without serious effort?
